Below is part one of a recent film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Produced and filmed in Japan, the film revolves around a female college student, Kisato Kibei who is studying Romeo and Juliet. When Kisato finds a young man injured on the street, she doesn't realize that she is about to enter her own Shakespearean tragedy. Hiromita Morita is the name of the young man and the son of a wanted criminal. This wouldn't be a problem if Kisato's father was not a police detective tracking Hiromita's father.

The trailer below is one of the more popular and modern interpretations of Romeo and Juliet. Directed by Baz Luherman (Moulin Rouge), the film is set in Verona - which looks similar to southern California. The story follows the luxurious, wild, and spoiled lives of melancholy Romeo (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and sheltered and sweet Juliet (played by Claire Danes). The dialogue is that of Shakespeare, but the setting is far from 16th century Europe.
If animation based films are more your style, check out Gnomeo & Juliet. The trailer below is lighthearted and aimed towards children. The big question is, how did the creators handle the suicidal ending?
